"What inspires me to make art? People and places, mostly. By
creating in my work, a world that is not quite ours but is like it, with
familiar sign posts, recognizable artefacts, and people, I suggest a story; everyone
has a story. Am I exploring the existential definition of being human, the
absurdity of existence? No. It has been suggested to me that my work is more to
do with self-exploration, that I am looking at myself, and how I feel about
living in a changing world. There may be some truth in that. For artists and painters,
it is their experience of life in the present which is reflected in their art.
Artists very often draw on their feelings, emotions, nagging doubts, or demons
in order to create their art. This is true for me as much as anyone else. But
in the end, I am just painting the things that give me that urge to create. Call
it inspiration or whatever, it is that intangible something that makes artists
want to do what they do."
